Transphobia is the fear, dislike, prejudice, discrimination, or hostile attitudes directed towards transgender, non-binary, gender-diverse, or gender non-conforming people.
Transphobia can take many forms, including:
- ·Deliberate and targeted misuse of names or pronouns intended to demean, harass or create a hostile environment
- Verbal harassment or derogatory language such as using slurs or making jokes about a person’s gender identity
- Social exclusion or rejection
- Systemic discrimination such as denial of healthcare, employment, housing or access to public services
- Physical violence or threats.
Transphobia can be experienced as a one-off incident or as a pattern of behaviour over time. It can have a significant impact on a person's wellbeing, confidence, sense of belonging, and ability to participate fully in work or study.
